Modern Farmhouse - Get The Look

Have you noticed the number of new homes with A line roofs, external timber and metalic cladding or mezanine levels?

Chances are they are part of a new wave of popularity being experienced by a look referred to as Modern Farmhouse.

A blend of more traditional country style, with a dollop of contemporary and industrial looks, Modern Farmhouse is the perfect tonic for those wanting all the mod cons of living in the 21st century whilst still enjoying the warmth and coziness of more traditional living.

Indeed, one of the key reasons behind this resurgence in popularity is the simplicity of the style coupled with a sense of homeliness and safety.

Interested in creating a modern farmhouse look for your home? Then read on for some helpful tips.

Tip 1: Modern Farmhouse is not Country

A common misconception is that modern farmhouse is just a new fangled way of referring to country style.

Although the Modern Farmhouse look borrows heavily from Country, there are some key differences, namely the use of accessories and patterns, as well as floor layout.

Whereas the Country style leans heavily on accessories, patterns and smaller rooms, Modern Farmhouse offers a pared back approach to decorating, with accessories and patterns kept to a minimum and floorplans favouring large, open plan living.

Tip 2: Stick to whites and neutrals

Warm whites, greys and creams are key to the Modern Farmhouse look and help reinforce a sense of openness and simplicity. When pared with the clean lines traditionally seen in Modern Farmhouse homes, this palette creates a modern feel.

This is not to say that all colour should be eschewed. Indeed, pops of black are important to reinforce a modern industrial element to the home.

Depending on your preference, you might also want to consider adding in some inky darker colours, such as deep greens or blues. Alternatively, you might want to move more towards a traditional palette and include small accents in colours such as lavender and pale pink - colours that speak to the outside garden.

Tip 3: Mix natural materials with man-made materials

If you have ever been inside a modern farmhouse, you will almost certainly have noticed beautiful timber floors as well as metal beams along the roofline. This combination of modern and old is a wonderful example of the way in which Modern Farmhouse juxtaposes two seemingly separate styles.

When it comes to flooring, the Modern Farmhouse style loves reclaimed materials so consider flooring that has been recovered. Alternatively, you might want to try whitewashing your flooring in order to create a more aged look.

Add more texture to your walls by exposing some brick. Once again, this provides a wonderful juxtaposition between modern and old and adds warmth to any room.

This focus on natural materials can also be carried on to accessories such as rugs in jute as well as soft furnishings made from natural fibres such as linen, wool or cotton.

Tip 4: Keep the bling to a minimum

If you have love a home full of colour and bling, then this is not the style for you.

Whilst patterns are not eschewed, they are to be kept to a minimum and should reinforce the country nature of the homestyle. These patterns can be used for soft furnishings or even pops of wallpaper so long as it is judiciously placed (in other words, don’t wrap an entire room in bold wallpaper!). The idea is to introduce small pops of interest, but not so much as to overwhelm the eye.

Tip 5: Mix and Match

Given that Modern Farmhouse is a mixture of two quite separate styles, it will come as no surprise that key to the look is the importance of mixing and matching.

What do I mean by that? Well in simple terms, this style is perfect if you want to keep a few of your late grandparents’ antiques on display but also furnish your home with modern pieces.

Modern Farmhouse homes combine vintage items with modern comforts - central to this, large, comfortable sofas and seating. Indeed, with its focus on large, open plan rooms, this is a look that calls for larger furniture - not only does it help to fill the space, but it adds to that sense of relaxation and comfort.

Tip 6: Shaker in the Kitchen

Common with many other styles, a kitchen with shaker-styled cabinetry is central to this look. Traditional but also timeless, it is the perfect companion to the rest of the home.

Typically in Modern Farmhouse kitchens, cabinetry is painted white. However, you might want to consider applying an accent colour (sage green would be perfect) to some elements of your cabinets (for example the island bench).

You might want to also consider some more traditional elements such a Belfast sink or copper or black tapware.
